Our Christmas

We were supposed to leave tomorrow for St. Louis, but b/c of the threat of bad weather we are leaving after C's nap this afternoon.  Our original plans were to celebrate our family Xmas tonight or tomorrow morning before Scott went to work.  Plans changed.  So we celebrated last night.  I made chicken pot pie (as requested by Scott) and chocolate souffles. We ate a late dinner (because we HAD to watch this dumb movie Scott had put in our queue so I was running behind) and opened gifts while the pot pie was in the oven. I'm embarrassed to say I ever saw this movie.  Terrible!  I digress.

after we annihilated it (not so pretty) Homemade but w/store bought crusts.
Mark Bittman's recipe

Scott and I decided to exchange the majority of our gifts during C's nap, so we could enjoy him.  I made out like a bandit.  I got a NOOK and some money to spend on my NOOKbooks.  Already loving it.  I love reading free samples.  I want some down time to just read.  I got some cute sweaters Scott picked out, some new glove/mittens (the kind that bend back and your fingertips are out), but good ones from Wild Country--that will actually keep you warm.  I got the Sound of Music, Itunes gift card, a NOOK case, and some wintery pjs.  Scott got a lot of nice stuff, too.  But as he doesn't blog, I'm not listing them.

We got C a rocket ship by Imaginext, a motorcycle (that he's been loving at the stores), and a doctor's kit.  In his stocking he got a pair of house shoes, and some cars (Hotwheels and CARS figures).

I think he enjoyed himself!

Attack of the Peanut Butter!

Thanks to Mickey Mouse Clubhouse for getting C to eat celery (with peanut butter) from the Mouskercising episode.  Unfortunately for me, C LOVES peanut butter.  He ate 2 stalks of celery with his pb, but requested more pb as he ate it off the celery.  Here's the result.

These clothes went straight to the wash. This was already his second shirt of the day, sigh. The table required a lot of cleaning.

Tea and Playdough

Tonight ended with a little playdough and tea--by C's request.  He asked for the playdough, and then I was making myself some tea, and he wanted some too.

Playing playdough w/C is basically making whatever he requests.  In his words, "I'm not good at building." Tonight was all about planes and space shuttles and having a "tea party"--I guess that's anytime you drink tea.

Monster Trucks book

C has been so into this book this past week.  It was a favorite of his in June when we borrowed it from the library.  Sarah and Mitch got it for him for his b-day, and we read it a lot.  It kind of got cycled out of the favorites for a while, but would occasionally make an appearance.  In the last week he's become fascinated by it again.  To my surprise last night, he told me he wanted to read it.  He can read 5 or 6 of the 14 pages at least.  He isn't really reading, but memorizing it.  They all have a rhythm to the pages, but it's amazing to hear him say words like "a milk-hungry heifer" and "vitamin d dose." It's about construction vehicles, city maintenance vehicles, and few other types of trucks.  Each page (except the last) is about a specific truck. The drawings make the trucks look alive--kind of like monsters.  The last page has stats about each truck. His current favorite is the milk tanker truck--which he was terrified of until last week b/c it looks kind of like a bull.

Here's the words to the last page--which he has memorized.

Monster trucks, monster trucks
Mighty, massive monster trucks
They squash and crush,
churn and crunch,
pack and stack ,
and Mix and Munch

Trials of Parenting but a cute little guy too!

I have posted before how challenging C can be.  He can go from being incredibly fun and sweet to a terror.  This jeckyl and hyde personality is always amplified if he is tired or sick.  He has been a bit under the weather for the last couple of weeks.  Scott and I have both been feeling bad for a week or so.  This makes parenting this stubborn child difficult to say the least.  The things about C that make him so much fun are also the things that make him challenging.

Advanced communication abilities:

Pros: he can tell us what he wants, he tells funny stories, he can recite stories and tons of others
Cons: we know he can communicate and it's extra frustrating when he doesn't use his words to communicate.

Ability for independent play and focus:

Pros: he plays very well by himself if given interesting pretend situations (i.e. he has been playing in his tanker truck all day--a stack of pillows in the corner of our room); he can stick with an idea
Cons: he is hard to dissuade from things/ideas (i.e. I couldn't get him to leave his tanker this morning to run errands and it turned into a full scale battle).  He can also be antisocial and controlling. He doesn't want you to play his pretend in the wrong way.  This leads to lots of frustration with other kids, so he often chooses to play alone.

In addition, C seems to have extreme problems controlling his emotions.  If he isn't getting his way he generally lashes out violently--even if it's hitting inanimate objects or yelling.  Most frustrating are his poor choices to hit us, the dogs, and other kids.  We took him to music class Saturday, and he was having a great time exploring the instruments.  A little boy was playing w/one he was interested, so he picked up a drum stick and whopped the kid on the head.  It was awful.  The little boy didn't cry, but it was really upsetting for me and Scott.  It set a negative tone for the rest of the lesson.  He was standoffish unless the activity was very physical and engaging, and he kept saying he wanted to go home.  He had a good time, but it was frustrating to see him be so anti-social. The owner was amazing trying to engage him.  He responded very well to her.

Scott and I are at such a loss on how to parent him through this.  It is hard to remain calm and cool in these situations.  I also struggle with when I get upset with him that he understands he is still loved.  He usually apologizes to me by telling me he will take care of me.  It is so sweet, but so frustrating.  I know so much of it is his age, but he seems extremely emotional.

Here are some highlights of the little guy today and from Saturday's music lesson.

Playing in his "tanker truck" (inspired by Monster Trucks, Monster Trucks book--which he has partially memorized).  Getting these overalls on today was an ordeal--he's not worn overalls since before he was a year old, but most things were dirty, and I knew if he didn't wear them now he'd outgrow them.  Pretty cute.  The only way we could get him to stop being irate about wearing them was to tell him he looked like a farmer or a truck driver--so he built his tanker here, where he had been sulking before.

Looking for "things" to put in his "truck." These things have been tools and dog toy ropes that he uses as lassos and fishing poles.
A hot chocolate mustache preparing to share with his airplanes.

One is taking a dive to get a "drink." He ended up with all toys that could fly on the table eventually. Lined up of course for their chance at a drink.

Playing the jingle bells he made at music class.

being the horse in "over the river and through the woods" which he loved after shedding his sweater.
sitting in the corner, but being engaged by an instructor.  She was awesome at trying to help engage him when he pulled away.

And winter officially hasn't started, but it already sucks!

Help--advice!

I'm doing ornaments for the kids at our mom's xmas fun time this week.  I want to do reindeer ornaments, but I'm having trouble deciding.  I have 4-6 variations I can do.  Please take a look and comment which one you like.  These are just mock-ups--so don't pay attention to the color differences--I hand painted these in 2 seconds w/different color paints.  I'm going to spray paint the clothespins, so they will look more uniform, but you can get the idea.

1 A--simple 3 clothespin reindeer.

2 A: more 3 dimensional by adding a craft stick

1 B--taking the simple 3 pin and adding brown poms and antlers (could remove antlers)

2 B--taking the 3 dimensional deer and adding poms and antlers (could remove antlers)

Thanks for your input

I'm going to have different stages of this ornament for kids to finish--for the little ones--just adding nose and eyes.  For bigger ones adding the bell or whatever else is necessary (if we do poms)

Bleh

That's how I feel.  Tired of being cooped up.  I feel sorry for C.  I feel sorry for myself.  I feel sorry for my sweet friends (and guilty that I feel a bit sorry for myself in this situation).  I'm bored and feeling a bit w/o aim--therefore I try to keep myself busy and avoid doing things that need to be done--like sewing Christmas gifts, wrapping, cooking dinner.  I need a fresh perspective.

Hoping we get to go to Mexico again this year as it is freezing here.  We have 2 more weeks for Scott to qualify.  Hoping our renter wants to buy our house (will find out in February).

Bleh.
