Want to know a secret? I don't blog b/c I feel so uninteresting anymore. I do nothing but sit in my family room. I don't really hang out with people, I don't go to the gym that often, I don't do amazing crafts or meals usually, I don't read amazing books, and I'm just plain boring. I know this is part of a season of our lives with having a baby and it being winter. But uh. I always feel busy or bored--like I'm pulled between the two in a very strange and inexplicable way. I could really use some encouragement. I want to do stuff, but then I feel overwhelmed with how hard any of it will be with my kids. I just feel like I'm sinking a bit. Anyone else feel this way?

Notes from the Random Files: I love this song!
Here are my current ear worm songs: "Next to Me" and "Just Give Me a Reason." Thank goodness I like both of them. I could actually listen to them on repeat all day long I think. I love that guy from FUN.'s voice. I will probably hate it eventually like Kevin Max from DC Talk. I used to love that weird thing he did at the end of his phrases, but now find it annoying. I am currently adding Nate to my list of favorite male voices:
Gavin Rossdale (not so much a favorite anymore, but once upon a time)
Kevin Max (same as Gavin)
Guy from Waterdeep (still like his voice)
Guy from Mercy Me (still like)
Chris Issak--specifically in the song "We Let Her Down"
Jason Mraz
Nate Ruess
Basically to make the list I would have to want to listen to one or more of their songs on repeat over and over again. I'm probably leaving off some, but these are the ones I can remember loving.
I think I prefer male voices though I do love me some Adele, Janis Joplin, and the Indigo Girls.

Cold weather, get thee behind me
I hate the cold. If you know me, you know this. This blast of chilly weather makes me feel cookoo! I was hoping to get by this winter without a maternity coat, but if this weekend was any indication, I'm doomed. I also get terribly itchy skin when I'm preggers, so the cold weather just exacerbates it (as does really hot weather--go figure). It seems a month too early to be breaking out cold-weather clothing.

Dear, untendend blog
Dear blog,
I'm sooo sorry for not paying any attention to you lately. I haven't even been reading blogs lately if that makes you feel any better. I think I'm starting to feel better, so hopefully we will do more exciting things in our life to document. I was supposed to come up with a family photo for a MOPS book and for C's preschool last week. We have no photos of the 3 of us together that are newer than 1 year old. Sad! I don't have any photos of myself with C since March or so. I have been a very deficient photographer and organizer of fun things. On a happy note, I have been busy baking a little baby, so maybe you can cut me some slack. As you know my dear blog, pregnancy and I do not have a loving relationship as it treats me very roughly. Ahhh, that's for another post though. Hope to see you soon!

Pet Peeve of the Week
I know this will probably not be a popular viewpoint, but I HATE electric fences. I know they keep your yard looking bigger, open, blah, blah, blah. I am frightened by them. Every time I am out walking/jogging and I hear a dog charge down a driveway or start barking and running toward me. I always hold my breath and hope that me (and sometimes my dogs) aren't incentive enough to make the dog bust through the fence. I am so scared of them b/c about 7 years ago I was walking Cosmo in Kirkwood, and we were chased by a dog that busted through an electric fence. It was so scary b/c we were in a quiet neighborhood w/o anyone around. Luckily a truck happened to drive by while we were being chased and blocked the dog, and stopped to make sure we could get away. Cosmo and I were running as fast as we could.
I also hate when people walk their dogs off lead in a neighborhood. I'm sure your dog is lovely and all, but it makes me nervous that a: your dog will be hit by a car or will dart off toward me and my dog (who is on a leash). I had a dog charge us 2 weeks ago when I was out with the 2 dogs and pushing C in the stroller. It was a nightmare. C's stroller almost got tipped over. It took forever for the owner of the dog to react and come physically pull her dog away. I wasn't particularly scared b/c I could tell the dogs weren't really going to fight, but there was nipping and barking and circling aplenty. Luckily none of the dogs were mean, but it felt like the longest minute. This dog was on a leash, but one of those extendables, and he just pulled it right out of his owners hand to charge us.

True Suburbia
We live in stereotypical suburbia. Seriously. You think of the definition of suburbs and we are in it. I'm not saying that's necessarily a good or bad thing, but it's the truth.
A little background: I was pretty much raised in suburbia of some form my entire life. I've never lived in a town smaller than 30,000, and I've always been within 45-60 min of a bigger town (except in college I guess we were more like 90 min). Anyway, I'm comfortable with suburbs. It is my wheelhouse, but Chesterfield wrote the book on them--especially upper end suburbs--not super high end, just upperish end.
Here's my "proof".
We see as many luxury cars as American cars out here. It is no thing to be at a stoplight less than 2 miles from my house and see a Mercedes, an Audi, a beat up Chevy truck, a BMW, a Honda, and a Jaguar all together.
If you can think of a chain restaurant, we've got it. Especially mall chain restaurants. Now we have a lot of great independant places, too, so no worries. If you can think of most middle-of-the-road stores, we've got it. I feel like I can get to most anything if I drive 10 minutes--seriously to anything (more culturally inspired) in 20 min.
We drive everywhere. I have been racking up the miled on my car b/c so many things are just 20 minutes away--zoo, science center, upscale shopping, small town shopping, museums, etc.
There are awesome bike, running, horse riding trails. Yep, horse riding. We live in a suburb that still has tons of horse farms on the outskirts.
When I took C to YMCA camp, I was dropping off with moms in Range Rovers, Suburban Hybrids, Tahoe, regular Suburbans, fancy mini-vans etc. Let's just say my 2005 Pilot wasn't turning any heads, at least not in a good way. All the moms wore their stay-at-home mom uniform of stylish workout clothes (lululemon of course) at drop off. By pickup most were showered and fancied up in sundresses.
We live 1.3 miles from a high school C will not attend (our neighborhood practically dumps out across from it, but only a portion of our neighborhood is in that school district). Yet we live 3 miles from where he will attend. The way these towns and school districts are drawn out here boggles my mind. You really can't tell where one town or the next begins and the same goes for school districts.
I'm starting to think the "Joneses" might have hailed from Chesterfield.
But in all seriousness I do love our new 'hood. It is a great place for outdoor activities. We have a huge art community, tons of live music opportunities, great library programs, great schools and so much more. I find people in St. Louis to be very friendly as well, so it really is a great place to raise a family.

Whaaa!
I feel like a whiny adult most of the time lately. I'm just disappointed and annoyed by everything it seems like. I need a serious attitude adjustment, so I went to WERQ (as in "work it" this morning, and it did not disappoint. That class along with Zumba is just fodder for human oddities. Here are my observations from that 60 min class.
1. I do not like to get low or shake my moneymaker all that much...especially w/o alcohol to aid me. Though learning this songs did make me seem hipper the last time I went to a bar. I was the only person in my group who'd heard at least 3 of the songs played in 1 hour...so old. I still feel stupid after a year of these classes doing this. For the first time I felt sympathy with the actors on Glee who aren't really dancers. Also those girls on that Pussy Cat Dolls be in the group show a few years ago. Choreography just makes you feel silly if you don't know it, and you know you look stupid.
2. I saw a woman wearing M.C. Hammer/diaper style pants. I swear to you. Straight out of 1990, but in capri length. I wanted to vomit. The instructor kept saying how cute they were, I disagree.
3. The woman who randomly yells, I can only assume what she thinks are encouraging grimace noises during the workout, was there. I have come to love/hate her. Thankfully the music was really loud, so I couldn't hear her too much. She yells things like, "Huh," "Show it to me," "Get it," and other unsolicited nonsense. Maybe when I move back to St. Louis I will try her strategy to see how many friends I make--NOT.
4. When Adele's song "Rolling in the Deep" came on, and the instructor turned off the lights. It was eerie with all that estrogen in there while we were stomping to that song. Then it chilled when it turned into a stretch song. For a minute it felt like a meeting of man-haters.
You should treat yourself to some youtube videos of women doing Zumba and WERQ, I guarantee you will feel better.

Scattered thoughts
I feel like all we're capable of handling over at the Dankel household is watching television. I feel like a complete failure as a parent. My lil' guy desperately wants to play (and watch tv), but I seem to not have the strength to play. It sucks! Sometimes I literally can't keep my eyes open while I'm holding a toy. I've allowed C to watch way more tv than normal b/c we don't go anywhere that's not mandatory--i.e. we don't run errands that suck up time. I do all my errands while he's at preschool since it's close to everything. Therefore on a day like today, we won't leave the house until almost 1 pm, which for us is crazy, but I've got nothing. C is always asking me, where are we going. Honestly, I just want to camp out in my bedroom for the next 2.5 months, but I have a 3 yr old that says no. Thankfully we do have commitments 5/7 days a week or we would literally go nowhere. I've had friends help with him, which I'm tremendously grateful for, but the kid's got mad energy sometimes and the weather is terrible. Thankfully C is going to St. Louis Wednesday afternoon, so he can receive some attention and stimulation.
We have been wrapped up in the Star Wars galaxy at our house lately. We have watched the first 3 movies, and will probably watch the next 3 next week. We've also been reading some library books about the Star Wars galaxy as well. C says when he grows up to be Aniken Skywalker he'll never go to the dark side.
He also had Scott read him over 100 pages of Eragon before he sort of lost interest--I think he only lost interest b/c he's so into Star Wars.
Even more randomness. I had my credit card declined Sat. night when I went out for dinner for a girlfriend's bday. I didn't think much of it b/c I wasn't sure if it was declined or wouldn't scan (which I sometimes have issues with at certain places). Then we went for pizza after church on Sunday. Scott's card was declined. We were freaking out. We assumed our credit card account number had been stolen and our card was maxed out--which would be crazy. We've never gone over 35 % of our credit limit, so it's plenty large. Scott paid and then on the way home he called the credit card company. They had frozen our account for suspicious charges. She had him confirm all our recent transactions to make sure our identity hadn't been stolen. It hadn't. Unfortunately he heard his Xmas present--it's from a British specialty store that only sells men's stuff. Ughhh! What had set the card off was the British store and three purchases at Walmart in 1 day. 1 at one store and then 2 at another Walmart in town. Nope--that was just us being really inefficient. I had gone after my haircut to the one in Normal. Then after lunch, C and I went to the video store to rent the next 2 Star Wars--they didn't have them. So, Scott and I decided to just buy the whole saga, so we went to the Bloomington Walmart (closer to our house). We also needed ice cream. We went to get the DVDs and couldn't find them. They kept the Star Wars saga behind the electronics counter, so we had to pay for it in that department, and then we had to buy ice cream at the front. So, my Christmas gifts will be somewhat expected--though he's not sure exactly what he's getting. So after Scott verified everything we were relieved.

Sorry...
I don't have a good excuse for not blogging other than lack of motivation and lack of doing anything interesting for the last month. I'm going to try to get some motivation, but no promises.

So much to post...so little time
Sorry about the absence--again. I have a lot of stuff to post, but the idea of sifting through photos is not so appealing. Eventually I'll get some up of the boys' campout over the weeked--that lasted a record-breaking 25 minutes (it took longer to haul everything outside); a crazy motorcycle ride at the arcade of Walmart (built to torment mothers in a hurry everywhere); and just little glimpses of life. I promise to work on this before the end of the week, but tomorrow is very busy. Both C and I have dentist appointments--me in the morning during his school and C's after lunch--which is always dangerous. Oh, and it's picture day at preschool.
We had to sit out music today b/c we were both feeling yucky. I hate feeling yucky. I'm already behind a day in my running this week, and I have to figure out how to catch up--which is almost impossible.
Sorry about the complete lack of flow in this post. Wow. I'm a literal genius--you're welcome.

Exciting Day
Today is an exciting day. Tonight we find out if my SIL/BIL new baby will be a boy or a girl. They are having a reveal party tonight after their ultrasound. The plan is to have a cake baked and then fill it with icing in the appropriate color-pink for girl/blue for boy. Then the future grandparents will see an assembled cake, cut into said cake, and then everyone else discovers the sex of the baby. Cute idea. Can't wait.
I'm also excited to not have to go anywhere for at least 6.5 hrs b/c I'm rocking my sweats right now--which I never do--especially in September. I'm thinking a nap and some reading this afternoon sounds good on this chilly day. Then a night out with the girls for some Tapas. Ow-ow! I'm needing some distraction from some crappiness that's been going on (not with me directly), but that has just been bringing me down. Ready to put it behind and have some fun with friends. Last night we got to hang out with friends, too, so that helped also. Now that I think about it, I've been away from home every night and every day this week--no wonder I'm so freakin' tired. Preschool is dominating me, but C LOVES it. Hooray!

Random...I just don't get it
I feel like I'm getting old. I've moved into the line of thinking of I just don't get the young folks these days mentality. For example,
Technology freaks me out. I'm pretty sure that soon some tiny "live" robot will be burrow its way in my head to keep me connected with what's happening now, friends, etc. This will eliminate all natural boundaries, but result in zero meaningful relationships.
Lady Gaga...I just don't get her. Her music is okay to me--I get that. It's catchy, makes you want to dance, but what is up with her? It's like circa 1989 Madonna spawned a love child with circa 1986 Michael Jackson with a little help from The Rocky Horror Picture Show. I just watched part of her Edge of Glory video (I say part b/c I can never stand to watch more than about a minute of her videos b/c they really go nowhere). All I kept thinking was what was that thing on her cheek? Beauty mark, tatoo, geometric code for the holy grail?
My ability to focus has been reduced to about 1hr per day. If I don't have myself a list I would probably sink into the recliner with the laptop never to be seen or heard from again.
I can't think of anything pop culture that I know about anymore. That's a sure sign you don't and won't ever "get it" again.

Dear Blog
Dear Blog,
I'm sorry I haven't been to see you in a while. Life is busy, but I don't really have an excuse. I'm afraid we might be coming to the end of our relationship (at least temporarily). I think I might have lost my funny button. I just can't think of anything to write about b/c I feel like I'm just surviving. I "might" have overcommited myself in about 100 ways, and I'm feeling the effects. I hope to get things under control and see you soon. Wow, my story has changed just in the time it's taken me to write this.

Technology is passing me by
During our free time while C was at a drop-off party yesterday, Scott and I went to look at tablets (like iPads for you non-techie people). We checked out the Samsung first. The rep started saying words like Doodles and Dolphin and other crap like that, and I thought my eyes might roll into the back of my head. It all started blurring together. Then to a knowledgeable Best Buy employee who started saying crap like storing all your stuff on a cloud (not literally--some technological mumbo jumbo that's better but similar in principle to google docs, but obviously capable of more than documents) yet having instant access as if it's on your hard drive. Oh my God--it's freaky. Frankly I'm surprised I can even work my smart phone after seeing how many features I'm obviously not using with Android.I'm starting to feel a little bit paranoid about the future of humanity and our obsession with technology. I'm pretty sure eventually we will sit across from one another and not speak, but only communicate via our phones or tablets or whatever new technolgy we are using at the time. Seriously overwhelmed. I HATE learning to use technology. Scott and I had a huge converstation about having to make a choice about being left behind by the ever-changing tech world or sucking it up and learning to use new stuff.
My prediction...in 20 years we are all technology zombies who don't know how to use our voices--but I guess we better get on board if we want to communicate.

Remember this guy?
I saw his picture on a Gascon display yesterday in the bakery-ish section of Schnucks. I was so pumped. I wanted to take a picture, but I didn't have my camera. Go to the grocery store and get excited with me. Then do yourself a favor and buy a bottle of Neste's wine (that's the winemaker's nickname). He was really cool and an awesome wine educator.

Frustrated
That's the best word to describe things around here. I can't really remember what I've blogged about or not b/c I'm too frustrated and consumed with my frustrations to do something sensible like go back and read what I wrote. So if some of this is repetitive--deal. As I know I mentioned before we are having A LOT of trouble getting C to take his medicine. Then Scott dropped the more hated medicine into the dishwater Sun. afternoon. We had to wait until yesterday to get the doctor to write a new Rx for it. I go to pick it up yesterday and they are almost all out of it, so they make a less strong version for us and then I have to go pick up the rest tomorrow. Do you understand the implications of this? C has to take twice the amount of the less strong version to get the needed dosing. 3 tsp two times a day on top of the other medicine 1.5 tsp twice a day. If I thought getting him to swallow the orginal 1.5 tsp was hard, 3 tsp is more than twice as hard. He clenches his teeth and won't open up or he will try any other such antic not to take the medicine. Medicine time can drag up to times of 20 minutes (like this morning). What worked last night didn't work this morning, so it was crazy frustrating. It ended in lots of tears and vomiting. Fab.u.lous. We are leaving the house today or I might spontaneously combust, igniting our poorly wired home into a burning inferno. Happy thoughts!

At a loss
If you had asked me 2 weeks ago if C was potty trained, I would have said yes. If you asked me today, I would say not really. We've been having about 1 accident a day for the last week or so, and last night he pooped in his pants (other than during sleep since the first time since we finally got him to poop on the potty). What the heck is going on? C doesn't really like the whole stopping to go potty. It makes him angry. I'm not sure how to deal with this aspect b/c this is what makes him have accidents.
In other news, I'm bored out of my mind. I've mostly been homebound since Sunday afternoon between me and C being sick. I feel fine, and would like to get out, but beyond running errands, I don't want to share C's germs. The poor hair stylist (whom I have never met) will likely get her ear talked off tonight when she cuts my hair. No idea what I'm having done with my hair. If I could lose 10 more pounds I would chop it all off really short, but I don't want to go to Argentina w/o the ability to pull it back.
Oh, and just a note about the weather. What is up. Beautiful yesterday afternoon. I go for a run in the evening (whole other tedious story), and I feel like I'm going to be blown away like an umbrella. Today it's cloudy and crzy windy. The wind ripped our storm door open last night (early morning) and then slammed it shut. It woke me up, and I was freaked out until I figured what it was. I opened the door and pulled it closed to discover the wind had taken my wreath and wreath hanger right off. No idea if I'll find it today. I have decided that the weather is like a menopausal woman. She just can't decide what the hell she wants, and there's no use reasoning with her. So dear Earth, please take your estrogen or progesterone and lets get back to the warm weather. Thanks.

Ring around the rosy
Just so you know...
When C sings ring around the rosy, "ashes to ashes" sounds a lot more like "asses to asses."

Week 1 down
Made my first week of training goal. I ran over 13 miles, lifted weights 2 days (with high intensity intervals), and rode my bike for 52 minutes (with a high intensity training video). Tired now, but it feels great. I finished my 5K today with a personal best time of 29:02 minutes. My official time should be less--can't wait to see the results. We actually wore timing chips in the race which start when you cross the start line and stop when you cross the finish. My time should be a bit under 29 minutes. I'm stoked about this. I think the best I've ever run a 5K race was about 52 minutes, so this was awesome for me. Now to tackle the 12K.
